Sen. Peters, former U.S. AG Holder push for police reform, social justice Policies
LANSING, Mich. — During a virtual conversation hosted by U.S. Sen. Gary Peters’ re-election campaign, social justice, racial inequities and police reform were all discussed Thursday morning with national and regional leaders.
Peters was joined by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and NAACP Detroit Branch President Rev. Wendell Anthony. Throughout the 45-minute conversation, Peters and the others discussed the current climate surrounding police reform.
“We know that we need to deal with qualified immunity. We know that they need to have independent national standard of record keeping and registration of police officers,” Anthony said. “We know there needs to implicit bias training we know that there needs to be a demilitarization of the police. We know these things.”
To make those things happen, Peters said it will take more effort in Washington. The U.S. Senate failed to pass reform plans last week after Democrats, including Peters, called the GOP-backed plan a nonstarter.
