Detroit Branch NAACP Calls for Governor Snyder to Address Michigan State Police Practices and Policies

Detroit Branch NAACP President Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony along with ACLU Michigan, Arab American Civil Rights League (ACRL), Atty. Leonard Mungo, Congressman John Conyers Jr. and the Michigan State Conference NAACP led a press conference on Tuesday, October 10 calling for Governor Rick Snyder (R-Michigan) to meet and address:

  • Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue’s role as the Director of the Michigan State Police (MSP)
  • MSP’s current lack of diversity
  • MSP’s testing practices

On Tuesday, October 3, Rev. Anthony sent an official request to Gov. Snyder for a meeting, details and data on MSP’s number of African Americans, Latinos, other minorities and women as troopers and senior staff since the federal consent decree removed in 1993.

Don’t Blame DPS for the State’s Continuous Failures

In his first inaugural address, Thomas Jefferson said “we are all Federalists, we are all Republicans.” It is important for some who make the laws under the banner of party affiliation, to remember your specific origination. According to Jefferson:

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action, according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.”

For those who believe that the current legislation coming forth from the Michigan House of Representatives, now awaiting the Governor’s signature, is the answer to the problems facing the Detroit Public Schools, guess what? You’re wrong!
