Safety in the City – General Membership Meeting with Interim Police Chief Chester Logan

On Thursday, March 28, 2013 the Detroit Branch NAACP held its monthly General Membership meeting with guest speaker, Interim Police Chief Chester Logan. At the meeting Chief Logan was joined by his top representatives to the community that are working hard to protect the City of Detroit. Additionally, Detroit Branch NAACP General Counsel Butch Hollowell addressed the Affirmative Action case that will be heard in the U.S. Supreme Court and City Councilman James Tate joined the crowd to share his views about the newly appointed Emergency Financial Manager Keyvn Orr taking over the City of Detroit.

First to speak was Deputy Chief James Tolbert, who spoke about the importance of young people and specifically children feeling safe while in their learning and living environments. He stated that the Detroit Police Department would be working very closely with the Detroit Public Schools Police Department since they are separate, but share the same passion in caring for young people. Assistant Chief of Enforcement Operations, Paul Wells spoke about the reorganization taking place in the City of Detroit Police Department and how it is most important to have officers patrolling the streets and investigators to solve the crimes. As the Department continues to reorganize their hope is to reach a goal of 80% of officers patrolling the City, 15% investigating crimes, and 5% working administratively.

As Chief Logan spoke he reported that crime in the City is down and will continue to go down as they reorganize and focus on the safety of our streets and neighborhoods. Chief Logan’s goal is to reduce crime in the City by 50% and he says that the Department is well on the way to accomplishing this goal. The meeting attendees received the presentation of the Detroit Police Department with much gratitude and looks forward to helping the Chief achieve his goals.
