Every Citizen is Entitled to Due Process, Including Congressman John Conyers, Jr.!

The following press statement was given by Detroit Branch NAACP President Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony during a press conference and rally held for Congressman John Conyers, Jr.

DETROIT — One of the distinct differences between our nation, the United States of America, and many others is a system called Due Process. We are a nation of laws, with a constitution that has been modeled by many across the globe. It is with that understanding that we are here to call for Due Process for every citizen of America, which also includes Congressman John Conyers, Jr.

What is Due ProcessDue Process is the legal requirement that the state must respect all legal rights that is owed to a person. Due Process balances the power of law of the land and protects the individual person from it. When a government harms a person without following the exact course of the law, this constitutes a Due Process violation, which offends the rule of law. The 5th and 14th Amendments to the United States Constitution, each contains a Due Process clause. Due Process deals with the administration of justice, and thus the Due Process clause acts as a safe guard against arbitrary denial of life, liberty, or property by the government, outside the sanction of law.

The phrase Due Process, in case you are not aware, first appeared in the statutory rendition of the Magna Carta in 1354. With that historic background, and the knowledge of a belief that everyone is entitled to Due Process, why are we subverting one of the very pillars upon which this nation is founded, on the back of a man who has served this nation for 53 ½ years? We are not here because we do not respect, love, and appreciate women or men. We have daughters’, wives’, sisters’, and mothers’. Yet, we do call for fairness.
